A LITTLE CLARINET MUSIC

T

he program for Larry
Liberson's April 13 clarinet
recital looks intimidating --
it lists nine different works by
mostly contemporary classical
composers.
But take a look at a few of the
composers Liberson picked:
William Bolcom, whose nouveau
ragtime works earned him a
Pulitzer Prize; Alec Templeton,
best known as the creator of Bach
Goes to Town; and Claude Debussy,
who penned Golliwog's
Cakewalk.
Along with more serious corn-
positions by Krzysztof
Penderecki, Carl Maria von
Weber and others, these works
— many only one to three min-
utes in length — make up a pro-
gram called "A Little Clarinet
Music." The concert, part of the
Vivace Series at the Birmingham
Temple, takes place 7:30 p.m.,
Sunday, April 13.
"The nature of the program
means a lot of variety," says
Liberson, a Michigan native who
joined the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra in 1981. "It's not a
deep program, but it's not exact-
ly a light concert either."
Many of the pieces have the
word "little," small, "short" --
or the German equivalent,
"kleine"
somewhere in their
titles. And Liberson ends the
program with two works for the
littlest member of the clarinet
family, the E-flat clarinet.
Originally constructed to replace
the high trumpet or cornet, the E-
flat clarinet is not much bigger
than a recorder, and sounds very
bright, almost as bright as the bet-
ter-known piccolo.
A graduate of Ferndale High
School, Liberson received a bache-
lor's degree in clarinet performance
from the University of Michigan
in 1975. Before coming to the
DSO, he was principal clarinetist
of the Grand Rapids Symphony
from 1976-81.
He also performs with the
Detroit Chamber Winds and
teaches at Wayne State University,

while making guest appearances at
schools and music festivals
throughout the United States.
Liberson, his wife, Judy, and
daughter, Slaaina, have been m.em-
bers of the Birmingham Temple
since 1983.
For the April 13 concert,
Liberson performs with DSO
pianist Robert Conway. A specialist
in 20th-century music, Conway,
who teaches at Wayne State
University, has toured the Middle
