JCCouncil Earns
Civic Accolades
The Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit received a
national award at a symposium in
Washington, D.C., on March 31 for
fostering black-Jewish relations.
The Council was recognized for the
2002 Detroit Clergy Mission to Israel
and West Africa, a trip that brought
together nine African-American min-
isters and area rabbis for a trip to
Senegal and Israel.
The Marjorie Kovler
Awards for black-
Jewish relations honor
individuals and organi-
zations whose work
brings together blacks
and Jews. It is spon-
sored by the Religious
Action Center of
Ann Zousmer Reform Judaism's
Marjorie Kovler
Institute for Black-Jewish Relations.
"Historically, Community Council
has been building bridges and foster-
ing dialogue and understanding
between different ethnic and religious
groups," said Ann Zousmer, Council
president. "This particular effort
seemed to do it all.
"It certainly fostered a much clo„ser
relationship between the two clergies.
They have come together in a whole
different light. To bring black clergy
to Israel and have them go home with
a positive feeling about Israel, then
relate that feeling to their congrega-
tions on Sunday mornings .is just
magnificent"
The Religious Action Center is the
Washington office of UAHC, whose
more than 900 congregations across
North America encompass L5 million
Reform Jews, and the Central
Conference of American Rabbis,
whose membership includes more
than 1,800 Reform rabbis.
"During a June 1963 march in
downtown Detroit, Jewish and black
Detroiters marched hand in hand for
justice," said Council associate direc-
tor Allan Gale, during his acceptance
speech at the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations Consultation
on Conscience symposium.
"Now 40 years later, through ... the
collaborative efforts between suburban
Detroit Jewish congregations and
inner-city African-American churches
... blacks and Jews in Detroit are still
marching hand-in-hand."
