Southfield, "all [the council does] is
have concerts and show movies. It is
foolish to think they represent stu-
dents on political issues."
Cichette also noted WSU President
Irvin D. Reid is "on our side of the
issue," referencing a statement Reid -
issued last October. The statement
said, in part, that divestment from
"companies linked to Israel or any
other legitimate state in the region is
simply not helpful to resolve the crisis
in the Middle East." It further stated
that "political beliefs, especially in a
fluid global economy, are not a practi-
cal basis for investment decisions."
Hillel of Metropolitan Detroit, based
on the WSU campus, is facilitating the
deliberations `of the students and pro-
viding information and support.
"Hillel is making sure that key com-
munity leadership is aware of the situ-
ation," says Miriam Starkman, Hillel
executive director.
"Hopefully, this issue will be defeat-
ed in the student council and not
reach the board of governors. I am
confident that, if it does, the board of
governors will send an appropriate
message to the student council that
will rule out any consideration of
divestment from Israel." ❑

He hopes that in addition to bring-
ing Jewish learning to Berlin, his work
will also help "promote tolerance and
understanding."
Druk will spend a short time visit-
ing his family in Oak Park this
month, including his brother,
Shmouel, who just returned from
Jewish outreach work in Japan. After
that, Druk will return to Berlin.
"I look forwarded to going back
with more enthusiasm than ever," he
