Soldiers On Duty
During Passover

s Jewish families around the
world prepare to gather for
Passover, local families with
loved ones in the military face the hol-
iday hoping for a phone call.
"I'm disappointed he's not going to
be home because, before the war start-
ed, our plans were for him to be home
for Pesach." Marlene Zeitlin of
Farmington Hills was talking about
her son, Allen, 21, a U.S. Air Force
airman 1st class based in the United
Arab Emirates. "I sent him a Pesach
package with matzah and candy, but I
don't know if he got it."
For the Zeitlins, communication has
been unpredictable, with Allen calling
when he can, but warning his parents
not to sit by the phone.

The Millers haven't
heard from their son
in four weeks.

a regular basis.
"At the moment, David can call
whenever he wants," Jan Deitsch said.
"I know if he wasn't here, I'd be in
such a different mindset. He's going
through a little more schooling. He
knows he's going, but doesn't know
when. The squadron he was assigned
to had just come back from the
Middle East when he joined, so we're
hoping the later the better."
Susan and Michael Miller of
Northville haven't heard from their
son, Kyle, 21, in more than four
weeks. Kyle .is on the flagship USS
Truman somewhere in the Persian Gulf
"They were on a black-out: no calls,
no e-mails, but he said that he could
read e-mail, so every day I write him
and say, 'I miss you. Hi, here I am
again.' I just tell him about everyday
things," said Susan Miller, who heard
through Kyle's girlfriend that he'll have
e-mail and phones again in a few days.
"I can't wait to hear from him;"
Susan said. "But Passover won't be the
same without him."
