Stephen Becharas ... and The Staff Of
English, the troupe has produced and
staged 17 original works, developed
educational programs, performed for
more than 120,000 people in Israel
and abroad and won national and
international prizes.
"We are continuously developing
our repertoire," says Lev, whose troupe
has performed in England, Scotland
and Hungary among many other
countries.
"There are very strong women in our
tradition, but their voices have been
less heard than the voices of men. I
think this is because women for very
many years were limited to studies
considered suitable for women."
Studies are an important part of
Theatre Company Jerusalem as the
troupe reaches out to those interested
in performance careers and those who
can benefit from performance skills.
One of its offered programs, "The
Jewish Narrative as a Theatrical
Experience," equips teachers with tools
for conveying educational material
using stage techniques. Although
Jewish content is inherent in the pro-
gram, deeper themes are emphasized
to reach out to other ethnic groups.
After she completes her Michigan
appearance, Lev will conduct residency
sessions at a Christian college.
Initiatives in India, Thailand and Japan
are designed to foster understanding
among people of different cultures.
Theatre Company Jerusalem's
newest production, Café Mirroire, is a
musical piece set in a cabaret.
The story line has to do with the
tentative closing of the cabaret because
of the danger of attacks fomenting
outside and the impact it has on
recalling the past.
"Each performance that I do takes
on a form of its own," Lev says.
"I've done [Esther] at all times of day
and find that people are usually more
thoughtful in the morning.
"I always want to meet the women
who attend these programs because
their ideas influence the work that our
company does." ❑
The "Threads" program begins
9:15 a.m. with registration and
breakfast, followed by the per-
formance of Esther from 10 a.m.-
noon Wednesday, April 30, at
