"We gathered about 30 people at Camp Ramah in California — rabbis, cantors, artists, lay people," Rabbi Hoffman says. "We sat at camp for three days discussing: What would an institute for synagogues look like? We didn't want to compete with any of the movements or denominations. We decided we want- ed to be the research and development arm of the movements, to work trans- denominationally. And not just between synagogues, but also between syna- gogues and federations." Since its founding in 1995, S2K has worked with 95 North American con- gregations, organized into six national and regional groups, known as cohorts. Each is supported by federa- tions and communities. The first cohort, in Washington, D.C., was comprised of five syna- gogues. The Denver cohort consists of 11 synagogues, including a modern Orthodox congregation, while, in Westchester, N.Y., 21 congregations joined the program. In Detroit, 13 Reform and Conservative synagogues signed up for a three-year program, which began in November 2000.
