ourage, hope and inner spirit are words -
family and friends use to describe Joe
Rothenberg. After more than 30 years in
the wine business, first as owner of Clover
Wine Cellar in Taylor and then with L & L Wine
World in Troy, he was "forced into retirement"
because he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's
Disease).
Although ALS is a progressive disease, which
includes loss of motor and speech skills, Rothenberg is
- walking and talking these days about a cure for ALS.
He spends much of his time volunteering for ALS.
On Sunday, March 9, at the International Banquet
Center at the Atheneum Hotel in Greektown, more
than 400 patrons gathered for the "Friends of Wine
and Tasting Auction" to benefit ALS of Michigan.
"We put this benefit together in less than six
months," said Sue Burstein-Kahn, executive director
of ALS of Michigan. Live and silent auctions show-
cased wine and wine-related merchandise along with
a tasting from prestigious restaurants. The event
raised $60,000. Rothenberg co-chaired the event with
his friend and wine colleague, Scott Mansfield. Kahn
attributes the success of the event to the many restau-
rants and wine companies that donated merchandise
and to the co-chairs. "They were the driving force."
