Community 39 Peer Education Enhancing The Experience It's hard to break paradigms, especially at institutions that have thrived on tradition for generations. But Synagogue 2000 has made noticeable progress at nearly all 13 local Reform and Conservative syn- agogues involved. Known as S2K, the national program provides a framework to examine congregational life and culture and to find ways to enhance the experience for congre- gants. Hundreds of Detroiters have invested valuable time toward the effort. At several synagogues, music has played a large role in enhancing the experience. Friday night services with musical instruments and new melodies or specialized onegs are attract- ing growing numbers. Other innovations are more subtle — changes in board meetings to allow members more input, establishment of a committee to focus solely on membership, new ways of greeting worshippers on Shabbat. In this week's cover story (beginning on page 64), Staff Writer/Copy Editor Diana Lieberman checks in on S2K as it nears the end of its three-year duration. She chronicles its ups and downs, talks with many partici- pants, assesses its accomplishments and explores its future.
