ARNOLD EDWARD SCHNEIDER, 94, formerly of Kalamazoo of Florida, died March 26, 2003. Early in his career, he worked in industry for the Great Northern Railroad, E.A. Pierce of Merril Lynch and Ford Motor Co. During World War II, Dr. Schneider served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He held a bachelor's degree summa cum laude from the University of Northern Iowa, a master's degree from the University of Iowa and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan. In 1944, Dr. Schneider established the College of Business at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. He came to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo in 1947. At Western, he helped to build the largest col- lege of business in Michigan. When he retired as founding dean in 1974, the Haworth College of Business had over 200 faculty members and an enrollment of 5,000 students. Dr. Schneider remained on the faculty as a distinguished professor of business until his full retirement in 1979. Dr. Schneider was the principal author of Organizational Communication, pub- lished in 1975 by McGraw Hill. He also wrote three other books and some 75 arti- cles. In addition, he served on the board of trustees of the university of Sarasota and as dean of the school of business at that uni- versity from age 79 to 82. Dr. Schneider was a founding director of the Western Michigan University Foundation; a Medallion Scholarship there bears his name. In 1994, he was honored for his contributions to the University in the naming of Schneider Hall, which hous- es the Haworth College of Business. Outside of the academic field, Dr. Schneider pursued his interest in aviation by learning to fly in the Western Michigan University's aviation program and remain- ing an active pilot until he was almost 92. He served on the board of trustees of the Sarasota Pilots Association. Dr. Schneider is survived by his wife, Joyce Thompson Schneider; children, Dr. Joel A. Schneider of Springfield, Ill., and Pamela Newman Kates of New York City; five grandchildren; four great-grandchil- dren. He was the husband of the late RoseAnn Shaffer Schneider. A memorial service was held at Langland Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to Western Michigan University or the Sarasota Hospice Association. JACK SONENBERG, 79, of West Bloomfield, died March 30,2003. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Sonenberg; sons and daughter-in- law, Kip and JoAnn Sonenberg of Rochester Hills, Steven and Helen Sonenberg of Oro Valley, Ariz., Dan and Julie Sonenberg of West Bloomfield; grand- children, Lauren, Evan, Michael, Paul, David, Scott and Andy Sonenberg.
