enior point guard Kyle
Flancbaum helped lead West
Bloomfield High School's
Cinderella run to the state
Class A basketball semi-finals. The
Lakers, who were unranked when
March Madness began, reached the
semis for the first time since 1969.
The team finished 22-5 after losing
63-54 to Flint Carmen-Ainsworth on
March 21. After West Bloomfield won
its district tide, Flancbaum scored 21
points in the regional opener on seven
3-pointers, including the game-winning
triple with 51 seconds left to lead the
Lakers to a 55-53 victory over Novi.
Flancbaum added 7 points as West
Bloomfield beat Birmingham Groves
70-59 to win the regional. Flancbaum
scored 10 points and made a key, last-
minute steal to help preserve the Lakers'
56-50 victory over Detroit Southeastern
in the state quarterfinal. He tallied 13
points in the semi-final loss to Carmen-
Ainsworth.
Senior guard/forward Matt Osher
played a key role in Groves' strong post-
season run. He scored 5 points in the
Falcons' regional-opening victory over
defending state Class A champion
Pontiac Northern, 76-67. He scored 15,
on five 3-pointers, in Groves' loss to
West Bloomfield. Groves ended 20-4.
Birmingham Roeper's varsity basket-
ball team included starting senior guard
Tony Kohlenberg. Freshman Jack Silver
started at guard for Roeper's JV squad,
which also included sophomore guard
Dan Klein.
Senior Jon D'Angelo was voted Ann
Arbor Pioneer's Most Dedicated
Swimmer this season. In four years at
Pioneer, D'Angelo never missed an in-
season workout. He swam the 100 but-
terfly this season. Junior Jason
Hitchcock swam the 50 free for Pioneer,
which finished 15-1 in dual meets and
won its second straight state Division 1
championship. Neither swimmer quali-
fied for the state final.
Sophomore Steven Weinberg helped
Ann Arbor Huron place eighth in the
Division 1 finals with a second place
finish in the 100 backstroke, in a time
of 53.37. Weinberg also swam on
Huron's 200 medley relay team, which
placed sixth, and the 400 free relay
team, which was 10th. Junior Nick
Welshans placed 11th in the 100 back.
Other Huron swimmers, who didn't

qualify for the state meet, included sen-
ior freestyler Dave Barr and sophomore
Josh DeYoung.
In the Division 2 state
meet, Bloomfield Hills
Cranbrook freshman
Gabe Schubiner swam
to sixth place in the 100
back. His time of 53.65
is a school record. He
also swam on the 200
Prinstein
medley relay team,
which placed 10th, and
the 200 free relay squad,
which finished eighth.
Albion College fresh-
man Justin Prinstein
allowed two runs in
four strong innings of
relief in his college
debut last month, to
M Flancbaum
help the Britons rally
for an 8-7 victory over
Haverford (Penn.). Prinstein was North
Farmington's 2002
Most Valuable Player.
West Bloomfield gradu-
ate Mark Flancbaum, a
junior second baseman,
started all 10 games on
,Albion's season-opening
Florida road trip, bat-
ting .441 and hitting his
Spaulding
first collegiate home
run.
Forward Kim Spaulding recorded five
goals and added five assists for Wayne
State's women's hockey
squad this season. The
junior played hockey
and softball at
Farmington Harrison.
In high school hock-
ey, Bloomfield Unified,
with players from
Bloomfield Hills'
Rotenberg
Andover
and
Lahser, featured a strong
Jewish quartet. Senior
co-captain Jeff
Rotenberg earned All-
League and honorable
mention All-State hon-
ors. The defenseman
Benjamin
scored
13 goals
and added 10 assists.
Senior forward/center
Matt Benjamin had 11
goals and 12 assists and
senior defenseman Mike
Goode tallied seven
