A

mong this year's new Haggadot
is The Open Door: A Passover
Haggadah (CCAR Press, 2003,
$19.95), which includes dozens
of illustrations created by University of
Michigan alumna Ruth Weisberg.
Edited by Sue Levi Elwell, it is a project
of the Reform movement's Central
Conference of American Rabbis. Including
traditional as well as innovative blessings,
the Haggadah
also offers exten-
sive commen-
- taries, supplemen-
tal readings and
newly commis-
sioned music.
Language is gen-
,
Up
der-inclusive,
Passover flaggadah
with women's
voices and Miriam's Cup highlighted.
"The visual aspects of the Haggadah
pose a wonderful challenge to an artist
because Passover demands that we see our-
selves as if we came out of Egypt,"
Weisberg said. "In every generation, we not
only strive to retell the
story in a way that
speaks to us and our
children, but we also
amplify the text with
images to give meaning
and heart to the words
we speak."
Earlier this year
Weisberg's art was dis-
played in the Amster
Gallery at the Jewish Community Center
of Washtenaw County. Sponsored by the
Bobbie and Myron Levine JCC Cultural
Arts Fund, original drawings created for the
Haggadah were exhibited.
Now dean of the School of Fine Arts at
the University of Southern California,
Weisberg's work is included in more than
50 museum collections, including the Art
Institute of Chicago, the Bibliotheque
Nationale in Paris, the National Gallery in
Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan
Museum of Art and Whitney Museum in
New York.

More New
Haggadot

Among the new Haggadot that will
be read at Passover seder tables this
year:

• The Haggadah Transliterated and
Translated (The Judaica Press, Inc.
Brooklyn, N.Y., 2002, $9.95).
Because "there are literally thou-
sand of Jewish people who attend
the Passover seder and can't partici-
pate because they can't read
Hebrew," Yaakov Smith said he
helped create a new Haggadah.
Created to assure that all seder
participants will be able to follow
along, this Haggadah includes step-
by-step seder instructions, back-
ground material and commentary.
It offers the entire traditional
Hebrew text, with each word trans-
lated and transliterated in English
by Smith, with easy-to-read words
and phrases like dayaynoo and n2d,
nishtanah.
For sample pages of the
Haggadah, access the Web site at:

The Haggadah Transliterated and
Translated is available at
Borenstein's Book & Music Store
in Oak Park, Esther's Judaica
Gift World in West Bloomfield and
Spitzer's Hebrew Book & Gift
Center in Southfield; by calling
(800) 972-6201 or through the
Web site at: vvvvw.judaicapress.corn
• The Traditional Egalitarian
Passover Haggadah (Norlee
Publishing Ltd., South Euclid,
Ohio, 2002, $10.95) is just what
the tide implies. It was created by
Leona S. Green after she attended a
seder where the words "foremoth-
ers" and "daughters" were added.
Retaining the Hebrew text and for-
mat of a traditional Haggadah, she
has produced a gender-inclusive
Haggadah with egalitarian narrative
that includes both women's and
men's roles. Available at Barnes and
Noble Booksellers, Amazon.com
and select Jewish bookstores. ❑
