Moynihan Dies At 76 Washington/JTA — Former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-N.Y., who battled against the United Nations' "Zionism is racism" resolution, died March 26 at age 76. In 1975, when the United Nations denigrated Zionism as racist and called it a "threat to world peace," the then- U.S. envoy delivered an eloquent and emotional defense of Jewish political independence that blasted the U.N. resolution as anti-Semitic. "It had become a crime to be a Jew who wished to return to the Jewish national homeland," Moynihan later wrote. Moynihan led the campaign to repeal the resolution, which was reversed in 1991. He also spearheaded efforts to establish international recognition of _ Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Moynihan served in the Senate from 1977 to 2001. Muslim Textbooks Are Anti-Semitic New York/JTA — Textbooks used in Islamic schools in New York teach anti- Semitism, according to a newspaper investigation. According to the New York Daily News, the books teach that Jews betrayed the Islamic prophet Muhammad and believe in racial superiority. The books, which also denigrate Christianity, are published by compa- nies that distribute textbooks to Islamic schools in the United States. The founder and director of one of these companies, Abidullah al-Ansari Ghazi, told the Daily News that some passages need to be changed. But the other publisher, Yahiya Emerick, stands by the books. "Islam, like any belief system, believes its pro- gram is better than others," he said. Reform Rabbis Back Troops Washington/JTA — Divided over the war in Iraq, Reform rabbis issued a res- olution March 26 praying for the safety of U.S. troops. The Central Conference of American Rabbis, which represents 1,800 Reform rabbis, issued the pro-troops plank at its 2003 convention in Washington, though it "acknowledged that its ranks News Digest are of varied opinion" about the war. The group "stands together in its prayers for the security and safe return of military personnel and civilians, separated from home and family, serv- ing bravely far from home," and mourned for the loss of "all human life" in• the war. Report Blasts Israel Abuses Jerusalem/JTA — Israel committed numerous, serious human rights abus- es" in the West Bank and Gaza, accord- ing to the U.S. State Department. In its annual human rights report, the department found that at least 990 Palestinians and two foreign nationals were killed in violence with Israel last year and that Israel carried out targeted killings in "crowded areas when civilian casualties were likely, killing 25 bystanders, including 13 children." The report also criticized the Palestinians for not complying "with most of their commitments, notably those relating to the renunciation of violence and terrorism, taking responsi- bility for all PLO elements and disci- plining -violators." Charges Dropped Against Legislator Jerusalem/JTA — An indictment against an Israeli Arab legislator for organizing trips of Israeli Arabs to Syria was thrown out. But at the same time it threw out the case against Azmi Beshara, the court allowed cases on similar charges against his two aides to go forward. The court said Beshara could not be tried for illegally organizing trips to an enemy country because he is a member of Knesset. Beshara's lawyer said he would appeal to the court to drop the charges against the aides as well. French Hatred On The Increase Paris/JTA — Racist and anti-Semitic attacks in France last - 'ear were the worst in almost a decade, a leading human rights organization said.
