• Start with the tablecloth. "It's a
blank canvas." For a Shavuot-themed
table, Ulrych once layered a chartreuse
tablecloth over a rust one, to evoke
first-fruits and giving-of-the-Torah
themes. She made a cake that looked
like a mountain with cardboard tablets

covered in icing. She placed little
Torahs around vine-and-grape-leaf
Italian porcelain dishes.
• Set a table based on what you
know of a Jewish holiday. For Purim,
dress Barbie dolls in hand-made dress-
es and arrange them around a candle.
Invite your daughter's friends to come
dressed as queens.
• Think of table items differently.
For instance, layer two triangular
plates into a Jewish star.
• Use what you have. "My home has
a lot of Chinese artifacts," says Ulrych.
"One of my Purim tables might be
Jewish-star plates and Oriental napkin
rings with Geisha faces."
