Al]. Kids Playground is metro Detroit's first fully integrated, uni- versally accessible playground. Special features of the playground include a poured rubber surface, ramps, transfer platforms and other safety devices. It is structured for interactive, dramatic social play. The playground was funded by a grant from NCJW; Waterford Parks and Recreation Department made the land available. A fund-raising celebration will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 1 at Seligman Performing Arts Center at the Detroit Country Day School, 22305 W. 13 Mile in Beverly Hills. Ted Kennedy Jr., a leader in civil rights issues for people with disabil- ities, will be the guest speaker. During the evening, NCJW's Children's Advocacy Awards will be presented to attorney Richard Bernstein, an advocate for statewide funding for special education; Dick Cartmill, director of the Waterford Department of Parks and Recreation; Dr. Ian Jackson, direc- tor of craniofacial and reconstruc- tive surgery at Providence Hospital; Lisa Kowalski and Debra Branham, creator of the Disability Awareness Workshop for Oakland Schools; and Alyssa Martina, publisher of Metro Parent magazine and a founder of Parenting Awareness Month. NCJW seeks additional funding to maintain the special equipment, to add more equipment, to build a play structure for young children and for educational programs to increase public sensitivity of those with special needs. Reserved seating for the event is $75 per person; open seating is $40. An afterglow follows the event. Call (248) 355-3300 for reservations and information.
