A Last Wish:
The Gift Of Life

T

he late Rose Grace
Kaufman (1904-2001)
lived to celebrate 94 years
and the birthdays of 18
great-grandchildren.
In life, she was a woman well suited
to the role of matriarch, for she occu-
pied a singular place in the family she
adopted as her own with her marriage
to Ira Kaufman.
"Rose and my
father built a won-
derful life together,
recalls Ira's son,
Herbert Kaufman
of Franklin. "From
the time she mar-
ried Dad, she was
our mom — totally
Rose Grace
devoted, caring and
Kaufman
loving."
Rose Kaufman's
legacy of love and caring now lives in
the bequest she's made to the Jewish
Hospice and Chaplaincy Network. In
this one act of generosity, and with
the guidance of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit, Rose has left
a priceless gift — one that will touch
hundreds of lives for generations to
come through the Ira and Rose
Kaufman Fund.
Speculating that Rose's decision
might have been influenced by the cir-
cumstances of losing her only child,
Lois, to a protracted battle with cancer
years ago, Herbert Kaufman's son-in-
law, David Techner, called Rose's gift
to the Jewish Hospice "a gift of life
and a choice she made long before her
death."
'As it turned out, Rose was in hos-
pice care for the final 10 days of her
life," Techner said. "Our family will
forever be grateful for the spiritual
comfort and guidance we all
received."
"The Jewish Hospice and
Chaplaincy Network is not a place,"
explained the director, Rabbi E.B.
(Bunny) Freedman. "We are a special-
ized service providing pastoral care
along with expert advice on end-of-life
issues and hospice care, with the pur-
pose of attending to the spiritual and
emotional needs of the entire family as
they undergo the most trying of

times. We do what we do, often free
of charge, because our community
believes that no Jew is ever alone.
The Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy
Network is sponsored by Federation,
Jewish Family Service, the Jewish
Fund and the Michigan Board of
Rabbis. For information on Hospice
services, call (248) 559-1500.
Creating a legacy, a planned gift to
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, can be of great benefit in tax-
ation and estate planning, while pro-
viding care and service for generations
to come. For information, call Stacey .
Crane, director of Federation's Jewish
Community Endowment Fund, at
(248) 203-1461.
