Not everyone born in Israel can be a tough-skinned sabra. "Sabra" is the Hebrew word for the prickly pear cactus, but more commonly refers to native-born Israelis, known for their resilience. Since November of 2000, that resilience has been cruelly tested. More than 14,500 acts of terror have claimed the lives of over 700 Israelis. Many thousands have been left maimed, orphaned, widowed. Israel's once-booming economy has all but collapsed. One out of every five families in Israel now lives in poverty. Every day in Israel, life goes on. But it costs. Those who are most vulnerable, those who struggle to fend for themselves — victims of terror, families without breadwinners, the frail, immigrants who have arrived with nothing — they need all the support we can give.
