my celebrity life," Paltrow says.
It's more than just insulating herself
from having her feelings hurt, she
explains. She believes her very survival
as a sane human being is at stake.
"I think it's deleterious to your growth
as a person to engage in that kind of
thing and to think or care about how
people who don't know you — think
of you," she says. "Any time you start
looking outside of yourself when you
make those kind of decisions, it can
only end in disaster. And it certainly
doesn't help in your work or your life."

At the same time, Paltrow is very
aware of the passage of time and not
just in her personal life. The career of
a Hollywood beauty — however tal-
ented — is short, and she knows it.
"My next three movies I'm doing,
I'm not making for money although I
realize that in Hollywood you have a
finite window to earn a lot of money.
"In Hollywood, they'll pay you well
for a short period of time if you're a
woman. Usually the commercial films
with fantastically talented directors are
written for men.
"There were films like Thelma and
Louise and Silence of the Lambs with
great parts for women that made a ton
of money, but they don't seem to
make them anymore," says Paltrow,
whose film A View from the Top, about
a woman from meager beginnings
who dreams of becoming a flight
attendant, is currently in area theaters.
She does have one great ambition
that remains to be fulfilled — to make
a film with Danner. Although her
mother played a small part in Ted and
Sylvia as Plath's mother, Paltrow
believes she owes it to Danner to find
a vehicle to showcase her talents.
"There aren't many mother-daugh-
ter stories out there, but we have our
eyes peeled," Paltrow says. "I had such
respect for my mother and father.
Now there's just my mother, who's a
wonderful actress, but who sacrificed
having a big movie career to raise my
brother Jake and I and to be a wife."
She's also developing a working rela-
tionship with her brother. She is pro-
ducing and Jake Paltrow is directing
an adaptation of Donna Tartt's 1992
hit novel, The Secret History.
One other unfulfilled dream remains
to be realized: The great Gwyneth —
Oscar winner, serene beauty and actress
for all seasons — admits that she's
dying to do a guest role on her favorite
television show: Sex and the City. Li
