Ask The Orthodontist

Mazel Toy!

Career Day
I presented last week for 2 middle school career days, as I

do for numerous and all middle schools that ask. I thought
it would be a good idea to write about orthodontics as a
career, so kids that don't have a career day can benefit.
Orthodontics is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding
jobs. I use the word job, but more appropriately I should
say opportunity to make a difference. Orthodontists do not
just straighten teeth, we change the way people feel about
Nelson Hersh
themselves and give them more confidence and self esteem.

Having an opportunity to enhance someone's life is a true

mitzvah.
You work with primarily kids under the age of 17 but 15% of practices are
adults who never had the opportunity to have straight teeth as a child. It is
said children are our future so an orthodontist has the chance to be a part of a
better future.
The job outlook for orthodontics is excellent. The average age of an ortho
dontist in Michigan is in the middle 50's, so the potential is great. The pay is
good and gives an opportunity to give back to society in the form of any
tzedakah of your choice if you choose.
Orthodontists usually own their business, so there are benefits such as mak-
ing your own hours, your own business decisions and creating an office envi-
ronment that is enjoyable. You have the chance to work with a professional
staff that has common goals and are well trained and skilled.
Most important it is fun. If I hit the lotto today, I'd be at the office tomorrow
and would change very little. Perhaps the average age of orthodontists is
higher than most professions because we enjoy it so much that we don't want
to give it up.
