He went on to graduate from New York's Hofstra University with a degree in music education, settled on the classical guitar as his favorite instrument and soon was touring in his own one-man show. Shane also played a variety of roles in national and regional versions of Guys and Dolls, Hit the Deck, Lady Be Good, Annie Get Your Gun, Shenandoah and They're Playing Our Song. "But my travel pace really got hectic after I became a King," he said. For many years, the trio did one- nighters, traveling in a van, playing almost every hamlet in the United States — from Esterville, Iowa, to Ely, Minn. Shane would drive through a bliz- zard, while another King would hem a pair of pants and another plan publici- ty for the act. "That's how we made the act famous," Shane reflects. "It's difficult to practice your reli- gion when you're traveling all of the time," he added. "I try to observe the holidays and do the best I can." While enter- taining on some around-the-world cruises, Shane has been able to cele- • brate three of his birthdays at the same restaurant in Mombassa, Kenya. "We've performed with a lot of great entertainers in many of the top venues just about everywhere, and we love it," said Shane. Shane's wife and teenaged son travel with him once in a while but usually remain in New York. "The Manhattan Rhythm Kings trio becomes the family for the three of us," Shane said. "So we talk a lot to keep up that homelike feeling. "Show business is based on emotions, and talking things out really helps. We do a lot of communicating." P1 505 S.
