To enhance the value and sense of accom- plishment when receiving their first siddur (prayer book), many Jewish children in the Detroit area join with their mothers in needlepointing a cover for their siddur. "It started years ago with Hillel Day School first- graders," says Rachel Einstandig of Rachel's Needlepoint in Southfield. Now students at Adat Shalom, Beth Shalom, Shir Tikvah and Yeshivat Akiva also work on the covers with their moms. Rachel has several hundred patterns to choose from, and will custom design a pattern for an additional charge. She estimates her shop helps 80 new prayer readers each year, including students in the Montreal area who send for the patterns. Most mothers bring their children to Rachel's to select a pattern. "The students enjoy having the input," Rachel says. Its real important to them." The projects are colorful and the holes in the plastic canvases are large enough for little fingers to help. Plastic canvas is used for its durability and no finish- ing work is involved. Parents pay $20-25 to do a front cover and approximately $15 to add a back cover. The project takes about 10 hours to complete, Rachel estimates, "or a little more if the mother is new to needlepoint. Mostly, they do everything themselves and I teach them how to sew it together." Pleasure One Hillel mom who was new to needlepoint, Miriam Foner Gould of Farmington Hills, enjoyed the siddur cover project so much that she now is doing three needlepoint projects simultaneously. "It was my very first time, but I'm addicted now," Gould says. Her son, Adam, 7, picked the colors for his siddur cover and did some of the background stitches. _ PERSONALIZING PRAYER on page C40 Fitt ESEAwAI0: .104E. :Rettlii.00e.t> A *A(AiAll SEM'00. .1AV.4.1* Boo ts Now!
