American House Red Wings Trade For Jewish Star MIKE ROSENBAUM Special to the Jewish News A t the March 11 trading dead- line, the Detroit Red Wings acquired veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider, the highest-scoring Jewish player in National Hockey League history. Through 65 games with the Los Angeles Kings, Schneider had 14 goals and 29 assists for 43 points. Schneider played alongside former Montreal teammate Chris Chelios in his Red Mathieu Wings debut, on March Schneider 12. Schneider's assist in that game was his 500th NHL point. Ehud Segal, 18, of Givat Zeev, Israel, completed a successful freshman swim- ming season at Oakland University by helping the host Grizzlies finish fourth in the National Independent Conference championships last month. He finished sev- enth in the 200 back- stroke, eighth in the 200 butterfly and 10th in the 100 fly, and swam on the second-place 400 medley relay team. The former Israeli Ehud Segal junior national champi- on also helped OU win the nine-team Mid-Continent Conference championship meet in December. He won the 200 fly in 1:52.06 and placed second in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. He also swam on the victorious 400 medley relay team. Segal was selected first team All- Conference and was selected the Mid- Con's male Athlete of the Week on Feb. 10, after swimming to three victories against Notre Dame. A future Mark Spitz? Roman Sandler, 14, swept eight individual events at the Blue Water Splash in New Baltimore last month. The son of Southfield Swim Club coach Alex Sandler won three freestyle events, two backstroke races, plus the 200 IM, 100 fly and 100 breast. The Birmingham Unified hockey team, from Groves and Seaholm high schools, included four Jewish players: senior defenseman Matt Adler (1 goal, 6 assists, 7 points this year), senior forward Ryan Zimberg (6-7-13), sophomore for- ward Jeff Berkowitz (5-2-7) and junior backup goalie Ryan Stein (2-1-1 record). South Lyon junior Josh Haron com- peted in the individual Division 1 high school wrestling finals in the heavy- weight class. The 235-pound Haron was outweighed by as much as 40 pounds, and lost both matches. His performance was a strong improvement from his pre- vious two varsity wrestling campaigns. He won just five matches as a freshman and was under .500 as a sophomore. This year, he finished 39-14. He fin- ished fourth in his district to qualify for the individual regional, then qualified for the state meet with another fourth- place finish in the regional. He also earned three varsity letters in football as a starting tight end/defensive end. This spring, he plans to try lacrosse. Senior wrestler Ian Turk of Seaholm was 29-10 this season and helped the Maples win their Division 2 regional by placing second at 140 pounds. Turk is a fourth-year varsity grappler who wrestled at 103 pounds as a freshman. Freshman Brett Forman, 145 pounds, competed for Seaholm this year at both the varsity and JV level in wrestling. Freshman Jordan Schwartz wrestled at 119 pounds for Seaholm's JV. Ross Tashjian, 14, won his fourth straight state ice hockey championship recently. A goalie for the Farmington Hills Fire - Bantam AA travel team, he played about half his team's games this year. He helped backstop the Fire to championships at the Pee Wee level the past two seasons. In Ross Tashjian 1999, he was the backup netminder for the state champion Bloomfield Hills Team USA at the Squirt level. Fire forward Mark Silverman of Ann Arbor scored the win- ning goal in this year's state final. The team travels to Orlando, Fla., for the 12- team national tournament April 1-6. The Bloomfield Hills Andover basket- ball team included a Jewish player not mentioned in our previous column: jun- ior guard Matt Ran. The Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood girls' hock- ey team included freshman forward A.J.
