ent experience than shopping at Betty's
Grocery that used to be in the same
location.
The strip mall on Woodward, now
occupied by Moose Jaw
Mountaineering and a few other stores,
attracts a trendy customer looking for
quality. And quality is what they find at
Papa Joe's.
Upon entering, the selection of
chocolate alone will make you swoon.
Godiva, Robert Schmidt and
Mariebelle are some of the best, and the
Mariebelle silk-screened chocolates .
($1.60 each) presented in a handmade
box from Italy are truly works of art.
The middle of the store houses an
enormous gourmet to-go area where
some of the cooking is done. Rotisserie
grills, stainless ovens and as many as 12
servers are on hand to help you with
spit-roasted rotisserie vegetables, poultry
and meats, along with a large variety of
salads and soups.
A gorgeous selection of up to 15
interesting raviolis are available, includ-
ing a red-and-white striped tomato-
and-egg pasta to butternut squash ravi-
oli with red pepper, parmesan, maple
syrup and sage (each at $9.95 a pound).
There is also an in-store sushi bar.
The front window is lined with
tables that allow you to pick up food, a
Coffee or drink at Cafe Joe's Juice Bar
and relax. Glass and stainless cases of
gelato, pastries, Breadsmith, Zingerman
and Dakota breads and Papa Joe's pizza
also line the front of the store.
The specialty food selection is
tremendous, as is the two-floor Wine
Loft. Wide aisles, terracotta-colored
walls and floor tiles, high industrial-
painted ceilings and simple architectural
black-and-white signage provide an easy
shopping experience.
Meats, poultry and fish are displayed
meticulously, and the fresh produce
looks like it was displayed to be pho-
tographed.
"The produce and meats are out-
standing," said Susie Sillman of
Birmingham. "My children want to go
there with me because they want to eat
their way through the store (samples)!"
she said.
Bottom Line: A feast for all, Papa
Joe's appeals to one's taste, smell and
visual senses. While the prepared
foods were somewhat inconsistent in
flavor and preparation, the produce,
breads, olive bar and chocolates are
exceptional. ❑
