Israel Investigates
Activist's Death

Jerusalem/JTA — The U.S. State
Department says it will allow Israel to
lead the investigation into the death
of an American pro-Palestinian
activist.
Rachel Corrie, 23, was killed in
Gaza on Sunday by an Israeli bulldoz-
er during the demolition of a house
allegedly used by Palestinian terrorists.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
told President Bush that his office
would monitor the investigation, the
White House said.
"The United States deeply regrets
this tragic death," a State Department
spokesman said. "We've called upon
the government of Israel and the Israel
Defense Forces to,conduct an imme-
diate and full investigation into the
circumstances of this death."

Israelis Question
Where Values Went

Jerusalem/JTA — Israelis are more
worried about a loss of social values
than about terrorism, war or the
economy, according to a new poll.
A nationwide survey of 501 Jews in
Israel last week by the Washington-
based Israel Forever Foundation found
that 31 percent said they are most
concerned about a loss in social val-
ues, while 20 percent were worried
about the economy, 18 percent about
terrorism and 12 percent about war.
Meanwhile, 77 percent said they are
poorer now than two years ago, and
nearly 50 percent said a U.S. war
against Iraq would improve Israel's sit-
uation. More than half of Israelis, or
54 percent, also said French foreign
policy is shaped by anti-Semitism,
and 23 percent called Belgian policy
anti-Semitic.

Hamas May Hit
In United States

Washington/JTA — Hamas members
may launch attacks on U.S. facilities if
Washington starts a war on Iraq,
according to Time magazine.
U.S. intelligence officials cited by
Time say the Palestinian group may
strike U.S. bases or spots where
Americans gather in Israel.
"What's more," a U.S. official told
Time, "you can't rule out their doing
something" in the United States proper.
