THE JEWISH ACADEMY OF METROPOLITAN DETROIT PRESENTS... CO-SPONSORED BY: ISRAELI FOLK POP SENSATION noritser MINIMIN =ES DAVID BROZA IN CO C successful entrepreneur, manufacturing women's swimwear, and her mother, Ronnie, raised the couple's children in a Reform Jewish household. "We were not very religious people," stresses Gore, adding that her family belonged to a Reform temple in Englewood, where they attended High Holy Day services and she and her brother went to Hebrew school. She did not have a bat mitzvah but empha- sizes that she values her spirituality. "Being Jewish in this world has, I believe, always been a difficulty for people, and I personally don't under- stand it," she says. "I have visited Israel and it had to be one of the greatest trips of my life. I will never forget it. "I enjoyed it so much that I entertained thoughts of living there, and I think about that very often. It's a wonderful place, and I want to go visit again." While nostalgia is, and always will be, a tremendous part of Gore's life, she has never been content to just gloat about her past stack of hits, which have included such winners as "Judy's Turn to Cry," "She's a Fool," "Maybe I Know" and her most-requested num- ber, "You Don't Own Me." The song rose to No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1964 and is often regarded as the first women's anthem. And while fans may still relate to the strawberry blonde singer as an all- American icon of the '60s, Gore, who never married, is steadfastly devoted to being a 21st-century woman, lending most of her outside energies to numer- ous social, environmental and women's organizations. She credits her advocacy to befriend- ing feisty and outspoken congress- woman Bella Abzug, D-N.Y., who, dur- ing the 1970s, spent three terms as the first Jewish woman legislator in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1998, Gore was a pallbearer at her funeral. "I've always been interested in women's problems and Bella mentored me and helped me achieve where I wanted to be in this world and periscope what needs to be done," Gore says. "It's hard to be in this world and not fight for yourself. Women still have a long way to go, and I'll be a feminist till the day I die." El Lesley Gore performs 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, as part of the "American Golden Music Spectacular Concert." $36-$45.
