Jewish women's groups reacted with
outrage to last week's Senate passage of
a bill outlawing late-term — "partial
birth" — abortions. "It looks very omi-
nous to us," said Shelley Klein, director
of American affairs and domestic policy
for Hadassah. "It is just the first step by
people who are committed to reversing
abortion rights."
The Senate vote for the ban was 65-
32.
Earlier bills were vetoed by former
President Bill Clinton, but President
George W. Bush is eager to sign a late-
term abortion ban, and GOP leaders in
the House are eager to give it to him.
The National Council of Jewish
Women called the bill an "unconstitu-
tional and dangerous attack on the
health and rights of women." The
group cited a Supreme Court decision
ruling that a similar law passed by the
Nebraska legislature was unconstitu-
tional.
NCJW officials say the new legisla-
tion just points to the importance of
their campaign to oppose anti-choice
nominees to the federal bench — a
fight they say presages a much bigger
battle over the next Supreme Court
nominees, who could dramatically shift
the balance on abortion.
The Jewish Council for Public Affairs
also blasted the vote as a "dangerous
step toward revoking a woman s right to
reproductive freedom."
The JCPA statement included a dis-
claimer by one member organization,
the Orthodox Union. The group does
not support abortion, but it has also
expressed discomfort with blanket anti-
abortion laws. El
