Reality Sinks In

For Jan and Bob Deitsch of Farmington
Hills, much of their support comes
from their close friends Susan and
Michael Miller, both former members
of the military. Their sons, David
Deitsch and Kyle Miller, both 21,
decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy.
Today Kyle is on the flagship USS
Truman somewhere in the Persian Gulf,
while David is at the Jacksonville, Fla.,
naval station waiting to be deployed.
David attended Michigan State
University after graduating from
Bloomfield Hills Roeper School.
"He wasn't focusing on his studies,"
Bob Deitsch said. "His friend, Kyle,
had been accepted into the nuclear
engineering program in the U.S. Navy.
David decided to take a look at the air-
man part of the program. We thought
it was a good opportunity for him."
His mother seemed somewhat more
apprehensive. "Well, I thought at least
he's joining the military during peace
time," Jan Deitsch said.
Six days later, all of that changed.
"On Sept. 11, I thought they were
testing my loyalty to the country,"
David said, reached by cell phone while
on leave in Daytona Beach. "When I
signed up, I knew there was always the
possibility of going to war, but it wasn't
like something I thought would really
happen. It's something I have to do
now I signed up to be in the Navy."
From somewhere in the Gulf, com-
munication is not so simple for Kyle.
"I have no idea where he is. He can't
tell me," his mother Susan said from
the Northville couple's home in Hilton
Head, S.C. "When he used to go to
Camp Ramah, I'd tell my husband I've
forgotten what he looks like, but at .
least I knew he was coming back. Now
I say to myself, 'What's he doing,
what's he feeling?' I haven't heard from
him in two weeks."
Michael Miller says, "We're con-
cerned, but we feel like he's prepared.
He's traveled the Middle East, to
Jordan; he's been to Petra. I travel
extensively. It is a scary part of the
world. I have to admit I take off my
mezuzah and my Jewish star, and I
keep a low profile. But he's a level-
headed man, he knows what to do."
Yet Susan said sadly, "But he misses
his Jewish connection. One time he ,

This Passover, Remember the Modern Day Exodus

Pursuing Justice for Jews from Arab Countries

900,000 Jews were driven from their homes in Arab countries since the '1940s — many more
than the number of Arabs who left Israel. This massive exodus abruptly ended 2,000 years of
vibrant Jewish life in North Africa and the Muslim Middle East. As we approach Passover,
we call on Rabbis and synagogue leaders to join the World Jewish Congress'
international campaign and take this opportunity to include this important and
overlooked chapter in Jewish history in their Shabbat sermons.

The story of the Jewish refugees from Arab countries must be told not only to
restore them to history but to restore a sense of justice to the debate over the
Middle East.
