Winds Of War
W

hen many of us think of
Jews in the military, the
Israel Defense Forces comes to
mind. But that's not the case
with some families in metro
Detroit whose children are part
of the U.S. military.
Though Jews make up only
1.5 percent of our country's

armed forces, that statistic isn't

comforting to families who long

But support can be found —

both at home and for the young
men and women who ready for
war on U.S. military bases or in the Middle East.
Jewish chaplains will distribute Passover kits
supplied by the Jewish Chaplains Council;
parents can find kindred spirits online at The
Brave Web list; and Jewish religious move-
ments and synagogues are responding, too.
But still the uncertainty remains. In a
poignant report beginning on page 16, Special
Writer Lori Weiss checks in with some local
families to see how they're coping. In accompa-
nying vignettes, staff writers offer thoughts on
war from a variety of community viewpoints.
