Jewish Americans
Play A Vital Role

It is very appropriate that the celebra-
tion of Jewish Heritage Week is
observed by two important Zionist
organizations: Hadassah and the
Zionist Organization of America.
Jewish Americans were extremely
instrumental in establishing the
recognition of a Jewish homeland.
When U.S. Chief Justice Louis
Brandeis — who was considered one
of the finest minds in America —
learned about the work of Theodor
Herzl and the plight of the European
Jews, he proceeded to establish
onism nationally. He became the
Iirst American Zionist president.
He was a close adviser to President
Woodrow Wilson, who gave his
immediate support to the role of a
Jewish homeland. In 1918, the peace
conference was conducted in Paris.
Brandeis sent Felix Frankfurter, his
protege and friend, to represent Zion.
At this time, the Balfour Declaration
was issued, after detailed consultation
and changes in the phrasing.
Frankfurter worked closely with
Israeli statesman Chaim Weizmann.
American Jews who have con-
tributed greatly to our society include
physicist Albert Einstein and Jonas
Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine.
Today, the most important need is
that Jewish American children are
taught about the fabulous role
American Jews have played in
American history and democracy.
Therefore, we hail the organizations
that are proclaiming and celebrating
Jewish Heritage Week, May 4-11.

Survivor Faults
Shoah Education

I am a survivor of seven extermina-
tion camps and a lecturer about the
Holocaust.
I am in constant touch with Jewish
and non-Jewish children. I find their
knowledge about the Holocaust is
almost non-existent. They do not
know the importance of the
Nuremberg laws, the. destruction of
Jewish communities and tragic mur-
der of the Jewish people.
Millions of dollars have been spent
in the United States building

Holocaust museums and supplying
schools with Holocaust learning
material. I wonder, with sadness, why
our children are still so lacking in
education about the Holocaust.
I can foresee, within a certain time,
the Holocaust museums in the
United States will become relics of
the past, as are now the extermina-
tion camps in Europe. Heaven help
us all in whose hands we leave the
teaching about the Holocaust.

Ultimate Goal
Of Terrorists

Despite the alertness of the Israel
Defense forces, another Arab bomb
exploded in Haifa on March 5, mur-
dering or wounding untold numbers
of Jews.
We wonder, is it the responsibility
of individual Jews to protect them-
selves from Arab explosions that deci-
mateJsrael? Are Jews supposed to
plead with the Knesset to permit
armed Jews to check any or all Arabs
in Israel, or are Arabs supposed to be
free of deliberate searches for bombs
and weapons by Jews?
Does the ISraeli government hope
and pray that, Arab bombs aside,
Palestinian statehood will not be
denied? But then, how far would the
Palestinian Authority extend? To the
Mediterranean Sea? After all, Israel
does sit on so-called Palestinian land.
'All of it," according to stateless
Arabs.
Many in Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon's government hope that Arab
bombs and terror will stop when
another Arab state- is founded. But
destruction and leveling of former
Jewish land in Judea-Samaria is not a
point that will hold government
attention.
A second Arab state carved out of
Israel means that Arabs will sit in
Amman, Ramallah, Hebron and what
is left of Jerusalem with bombs
exploding in the midst of Jews
because having gained part of the
land, only the coastal plain will
remain to be taken under the
Palestinian wing.
