hat began as a project
for seniors and teens to
work together on holi-
day decorating became
a cultural, religious lesson for the two
groups.
The month-long program combined
the artistic talents of a dozen students
from the Lifeskills Group of the Laker
Academy Alternative High School in
West Bloomfield and Jewish
Apartments and Services residents.
The students, along with their
teacher Laura Richardson, met weekly
at both the Norma Jean and Edward
Meer, and Lillian and Samuel
Hechtman Jewish Apartments, both in
West Bloomfield.
- "The interaction between the seniors
and the students is very heartwarming
and a joy to observe, said Esther Winer,
JAS community outreach coordinator,
who organized the project.
"Because of the diverse population
living in the apartment buildings and
the array of Laker Academy students,
not only have the residents and students
been sharing their religious back-
grounds, but their personal lives as well.
Such multicultural interaction enriches
the lives of the seniors as well as the stu-
dents."

Laker student Ashley Moore, 19, of
Pontiac, Hechtman resident Ellen Moss,
student Trista Pannill, 18, of West
Bloomfield, Hechtman resident Manny
Koenigsberg and student Julie Ploskova,
17, of West Bloomfield gather around
the arts and crafts table.

Hechtman residents Frances Miller and
Roz Bassin prepare candy bags
for the students.

Laker students Courtney Hutton, 18, of
Highland, Lindsey McGlone, 19, of
West Bloomfield, and Jason Konja, 17,
of Farmington Hills display their art-
work with Hechtman residents Anna
Hellman, Laura, Wise and Ellen Moss.
