More recently, she served as lawyer for the Washington, D.C., firm Perkins Coie, which houses one of the country's preeminent political law practices and counts dozens of Democratic lawmakers among its clients. For those who worry that Weintraub might be too sympathetic to the authors of the new campaign finance law, she makes it clear that she has empathy for those who must navigate their way through the arcane regula- tions that took effect in November — regulations that did everything from banning soft money to restricting minors from contributing to political campaigns. "I really feel for regulated members of the community and their lawyers who are sitting there with these vol- umes of paper on their desk trying to assimilate all this and trying to figure out what we did," explained Weintraub, who — when she is not being addressed as "Chair" — answers to a less formal title, "Mom." Russell Feingold, D-Wis., married in 1986 . when they were both working as lawyers in New York. Having found their calling in the world of politics, the couple now resides just outside the District of Columbia in Montgomery County, Md., with their three children. Pictures of their children — two daughters, ages 7 and 11, and their 15-year-old son -- adorn Weintraub's office. What the pictures do not reveal is that Weintraub's son, Matthew, is autistic. Weintraub's devotion to her family, and her determination to provide Matthew with as normal a life as pos- sible were described in a 2001 Washington Post story in which she lamented the possible elimination of a state program that assisted the family in Matthew's care. If it seems that Weintraub has a full plate these days, she certainly seems up to the challenge. In fact, one gets the distinct impression that she wouldn't want it any other way. "I'm the only Democrat who gets a gavel these days," she quipped. 'It's nice that somebody gets one." ❑
