Election Lineup

In Pennsylvania, media reports suggest
that Sen. Arlen Specter, the lone Jewish
Republican in the Senate, could face a
strong primary challenge when he runs
for a fifth term next year. His potential
challenger: Rep Pat Toomey, R.-Pa.,
who announced his intentions to the
magazine Human Events.
Specter, one of the few remaining
GOP moderates, is increasingly out of
step with the Republican leadership;
among other sins, the crusty, independ-
ent-minded lawmaker is generally pro-
choice and pro-gun control in a party
that has moved dramatically in the
opposite direction.
"There are reports that GOP leaders
wouldn't be sorry to see him defeated
in a primary — but only
if the challenger is
strong enough to ensure
that the GOP will hold
on to the seat. "The
conservative leadership
may not like Arlen, but
they're going to. be very
careful about signaling
Condoleezza
support for a primary
Rice
opponent, because they
can't afford to lose the seat to a
Democrat," said a leading pro-Israel
activist
In Wisconsin, Republican officials are
actively shopping for a candidate to run
against Sen. Russ Feingold, a quirky
progressive who will be guning for a
third term in 2004. Republican leaders
have been pushing Health and Human
Services Secretary Tommy Thompson
to run against Feingold. Thompson was
an enormously popular governor of the
state before joining the George W.
Bush cabinet, and there has been wide-
spread speculation that he may be eager
to return to the dairy state.
But recently Thompson splashed cold
water on those hopes, indicating that
he had no interest in a return to elec-
toral politics. And Feingold is enjoying
a political bounce in the liberal state
from his opposition to unilateral U.S.
military action in Iraq.
A similar process is underway in
California, where the GOP is trying to
convince big-name candidates —
including National Security Advisor
Condoleezza Rice and movie muscle-
man Arnold Schwarzenegger — to take
on Sen. Barbara Boxer, another Jewish
Democrat. But California newspapers
report that both Rice and
Schwarzenegger are more interested in
running for governor in 2006. LJ
