Daniel Hope: "One of my most important projects is a CD I recently recorded with
music composed in the Theresienstadt ghetto," says the violinist.
He is replacing an instrumentalist
who suffered a serious injury and will
be with the trio on the East Coast in
April.
Enthusiastic about joining Beaux
Arts, he first made sure the association
would not interfere with his schedule
of doing solo engagements and taking
on special projects.
"One of my most important projects
is a CD I recently recorded with music
composed in the Theresienstadt ghet-
to," the Jewish musician explains.
"This is really extraordinary music
that has only come to light in the last
few years. The recording will be corn-
ing out in April with very emotional
and wonderful music.
"I'm writing the liner notes for the
CD, and I'm in contact with a few sur-
vivors from the Theresienstadt camp.
"I'm immersing myself in this terri-
ble information at the same time that
I'm working on the uplifting story of
music able to survive the horrors of
that period."
Hope, who can trace his heritage to
his relatives killed in the Holocaust, -
visited Israel a number of times before
being asked to perform there.
Besides wanting to see friends in the
country, he was interested in experi-
encing the land and its history.
The violinist recently moved to
Oakland Press
of Milford
Amsterdam to be with his girlfriend,
double bassist Annika Pigorsch.
The two met in rehearsal for a con-
cert and worked together on one of
Hope's special projects, "War and
Pieces," a semi-staged production that
explores war as heard over the cen-
turies in words and music.
While Pigorsch found work with an
orchestra in the Netherlands, Hope's
touring schedule allows him to live
anywhere.
"I have a new Web site
(www.danielhope.com), and I get a
lot of feedback from my audiences,
Hope says. "I love to learn what peo-
ple are thinking — whether it's about
the performance or the piece.
"There's an article on the site that I
wrote about Takemitsu, and I'm happy
to comment on his music." El
