Laker Scholarship
For Israel Study

Adat Shalom Synagogue is seeking
students to apply for the Harry and
Sarah Laker Memorial Scholarship, a
grant of $2,500 for university level
study in Israel.
The Robert and Gertrude Berman
Scholarship is available to those col-
lege students who are interested in
pursuing Judaic studies in the United
States or in Israel. A $1,500 stipend
will be awarded.
Application deadline is May 12.
Applications can be obtained from
Sheila Lederman at the synagogue,

Applicants must be residents of the
Detroit area and attending a college or
university in the United States.

BBYO Slates
Heritage Night

B'nai B'rith Youth Organization
(BBYO) will conduct a Jewish
Heritage Night 5:45 p.m. Sunday,
March 2, at the Laker Education
Center in West Bloomfield.
Titled "How Israel Relates to Our
Jewish Identity," the program will
feature a mock debate between
Shoshana Becker, an Israeli Jew, and
Owen Alterman, an American Jew.
Becker is community youth shlicha
(emissary), working as part of the
Israel and Overseas Department of
the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
Alterman, a law student and
research assistant to Alan Dershowitz
at Harvard University, is a past
Michigan Region AZA president.
BBG Jewish Heritage Chair Robyn
King and AZA Vice President Brian
Rosenbaum are program coordina-
tors.
Following the debate about Israel's
role in Jewish identity, BBYO mem-
bers will continue the discussion in
breakout groups focusing on Israeli
geography, culture, Bible stories and
other topics. Israeli food will corn-
plement the theme.
The program is open to all
Michigan Region BBYO members.
