Federation Forum

Federation Forum to
be held on Thursday,
March 20, noon to
1:30 p.m., at the
Townsend Hotel in
Heath
Birmingham. His
Merriwether
topic will be
"Striking a Balance,"
reflecting on his recent trip to Israel.
Federation Forum is chaired by
Mindy Soble Kaufman and is spon-
sored by the Community Outreach
and Education Department (CORE)
of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.

Essay Contest
Explores Cultures

The Arab American and Jewish Friends
will sponsor its annual essay/scholarship
contest for local high school junior and
senior students of Arabic, Chaldean and
Jewish descent.
The goal of the annual "Ties That
Bind" contest is to allow students to dia-
logue, interact and learn about each
other and each other's cultures.
Students are required to participate in
a cultural sharing day, giving them an
opportunity to not only share and learn
about their individual and cultural dif-
ferences, but to understand and cele-
brate their commonalities. Students are
partnered with each other on that day_
and are expected to spend additional
time getting to know one another and
exploring their respective values, beliefs
and traditions.
Participants work together to write an
essay about the ties that bind them as
people. A half-day writing workshop will
provide students with structure and
assistance. The final document must be
between 750-1,000 words. Essay win-
ners receive scholarship awards of $250-
$1,500. The money is raised vai the
annual AAJF dinner in June. The stu-
dents are welcome at the dinner, where
the contest winners will be honored.
