ir

hen there's a crisis in Israel,
a great many Jews in our
community open their purse
strings, along with their heartstrings,
and ask questions later.
But as the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit begins its second
Israel emergency campaign, to run
KERI
through March, the Jewish News wanted
GUTEN
to put faces on some of the programs
COHEN
being funded by our community.
Story
You won't soon forget the children of

Hadera enjoying perhaps their only hot
meal of the day, the peace of mind of
an elderly woman with an emergency call button in her
apartment or the wife holding the photograph of the
husband she lost in a bus bombing last year.
At the Jewish News request, photographer Debbie
Hill and reporter Jessica Steinberg, both of Jerusalem,
traveled to the Central Galilee, Detroit Jewry's
Partnership 2000 region, and other parts of the Jewish
state to bring you the stories and faces behind the pro-
grams funded by Detroiters.
Given this week's suicide bombing of a bus in
Haifa, leaving at least 16 dead and several hurt, these
stories provide a bright spot on the Israeli horizon and
prove that Detroit's dollars are making a difference.
