Comprehensive Cancer Center of
Metropolitan Detroit in 1970 following
the death of Meyer Prentis from cancer.
The Lithuanian-born Prentis served as
treasurer of the General Motors
Corporation for 32 years; until recently,
he was the highest-ranking Jew in the
automobile industry.
Prentis, whose last name appears as
Prensky until the 1924 GM annual
report, joined GM as chief accountant
and auditor, rising to comptroller in
1916. He served as treasurer from 1919
until his retirement in 1952.
Working in tandem with GM's Alfred
P. Sloan, Jr., the two built GM into a
worldwide industrial behemoth.
Prentis was the founder and first sec-
retary-treasurer of the United -Found-
ation of Greater Detroit (now the
United Way for Southeastern Michigan)
and played an active role in the Jewish
Welfare Federation and Temple Beth El.
The Wayne State University School
of Business Administration was created
largely through the efforts of Prentis.
The school is housed in the Meyer and
Anna Prentis Building on Cass Avenue
on WSU's Detroit campus.
Prentis also played a major role in the
creation of the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine at Yeshiva Uni-versity in
New York City.
Two of Prentis' daughters, Mrs. Lester
Morris and Mrs. Beverly Straus, are still
living. Mrs. Lawrence Lande, who was
married to the Canadian author, poet
and bibliophile, and Barbara Frenkel
are deceased. ❑
