New York/JTA — A commission
investigating Jewish - art plundered by
the Nazis failed to examine critical
data, according to a report in the New
York Times.
Key members of the Clinton admin-
istration's Presidential Advisory
Commission on Holocaust Assets in
the United States told the Times that
the panel's 2000 report, "Plunder and
Restitution," noted that the State
Department notified U.S. museums
about looted art as early as 1946, but
did not follow up to see how they
responded.

In Wednesday's attack, the Egged bus
was about halfivay through its route
from the city's Central Bus Station to
Haifa University, at the tip of Mt.
Carmel, when the explosion took place.
The blast blew off the roof, leaving
the frame of the bus charred and twist-
ed. Borovsky, the police chief, said the
terrorist apparently boarded the bus sev-
eral stops before detonating the bomb.
The bus driver, who was lightly
wounded, saw nothing suspicious
prior to the explosion. "I pulled up
to the stop and opened the doors and
suddenly there was an explosion,"
Marwan Darmouni recalled. "Then I
didn't feel anything.
"When I opened my eyes, every-
thing was destroyed, there was blood
on my hands. I tried to get off the
bus, and everyone was trying to
phone the police and evacuate the
wounded."
Darmouni, an Israeli Arab from the
town of Shfaram, said security guards
assigned to public transportation usu-
ally get on his bus, but that he hadn't
seen any on Wednesday.
