"My parents are totally rad and cool
people, good friends. They always sup-
ported my music. They used to drive
me to Dallas on school nights for
open mike," he says.
The musician has two sisters, one
younger, one older. Not eager to say
much about them, he simply says, Its
good to have sisters."
But he's not adverse to writing and
singing about the family. The lyrics to
"Family Tree" include:
"If my mental state kept you from
coming around/ I hope the world
would shoot me down for losing you/
A broken branch I'd be if you weren't
grown to me.
The music video for his song
"Commerce,-TX" is due to join MTV's
rotation this week. "It's really fun," he
says of the work surrounding the music.
"I like the visual aspects of video,
the album artwork, the concept, the
idea. It's cool. The trick is to be as
involved as possible so it doesn't come
out as something that's not you."
For example, on the cover of Sha
Sha, Kweller's in a soft-focus photo
brushing his teeth.
"I saw all these people posing on
their covers, and thought that it would
be fun. Plus we get to give out these
funky red toothbrushes to the audi-
ence," he says.

Fondness For Detroit

On the tour bus with the band,

Kweller's listening to music or to
books on tape — mostly westerns and
Stephen King — if he's not reading
one.
"I read lots of nonfiction," he adds.
"Maybe because I left school early, I'm
trying to get that information."
Israel also holds an interest. "I'd love
to go there," he says, sounding ready
to get on a plane. "I'd like to play
there, and help in some way."
But first he's ready for Detroit, and
for the Australian tour that starts just a
few days later.
"I've got a big place in my heart for
Detroit," he says. "[The last time I
was here] I was heading to the show
but I'd lost [a piece of equipment] at
my last place.
So a guy took me to the Guitar
Center and bought [the equipment],
and when we turned the corner near
the theater there was a huge line up
the street.
"It was the first time I'd had that,
and it was a really cool feeling."
Kweller has a word to describe the
feeling: dayenu. ❑
