basketball star David Zeitlin
started four of Lake Superior
State's 27 games in his fresh-
man season. The point guard averaged
1.8 points and 1.8 assists per contest
and shot 35 percent
from 3-point range.
Mat Ishbia, a
former
Birmingham
Groves standout
and Michigan State
reserve, is now a
graduate assistant at
MSU.
Dr. Stuart
On the high
Kirschenbaum
school scene, senior
guard/forward Matt
Osher is a starter and tri-captain for
Groves' varsity basketball team. Guard
Max Jacobson started for the Falcons'
JV squad. The Falcons' freshman lineup
included starting forward Daniel Osher,
sixth man/forward David Wiseman and
reserve guard Mike Posner.
Key reserves on North Farmington's
varsity include junior guard Greg
Shumer and senior forward David
Grant, while guard Mike Silverman
started for Detroit Country Day's fresh-
man team.
Senior point guard Kyle Flancbaum
provides excellent floor leadership for
West Bloomfield High. Flancbaum,
who led the Lakers in assists last season,
averages 8 points and 11 assists per
game this year. West Bloomfield gradu-
ate Mike Roth, who's studying sports
management at the University of
Michigan, is the Lakers' graduate assis-
tant. He does everything from film
work to scouting.
Bloomfield Hills Andover's basketball
program features Jewish players at every
level, including starting varsity point
guard Jordan Sherman, a junior. Junior
shooting guard Noah Smith was also a
starter until he injured his shoulder.
Other varsity contributors include sen-
ior power forward Brandon Barnett
and junior guard Jonathon Beitner.
Freshman Andrew Stein became the
starting point guard for the Barons' JV
squad at the end of the season. Another
key JV player is sophomore guard

Adam Weiner. Guard Josh Segal put up
some impressive numbers for the fresh-
man team, including a recent 26-point
effort.
Burt Hurshe, 56, has been one of the
area's premier sports officials for 32
years. He currently officiates high school
football, basketball, baseball and softball
games. The Waterford resident is a part-
time phys ed teacher in the Waterford
School District. According to Hurshe,
other area Jewish officials include Al
and Rick Kaczander, Fred Cohen,
Mike Ross, Dennis Brenner and Mike
Chogan.
Former high school coach Howard
Golding is now an assistant men's coach
at Schoolcraft College. The 25-2 squad
is the fourth-ranked junior college team
in the nation. Golding has also coached
Detroit's Maccabi basketball team for
11 years.
Former Michigan Boxing Commis-
sioner Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum —
now president of the Michigan Jewish
Sports Foundation — appears in the
new boxing documentary series,
