Beth El To Host
Cooking Program

Marlene Sorosky, author of Fast 6- Festive
'Weals for the Jewish Holidays, will headline
the Flavors of Jewish Life cooking pro-
gram 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at
Temple Beth El.
Other chefs expected to teach classes
during the program include Matt
Prentice, president and chief executive
officer of Unique Restaurant Corp.;
Annabel Cohen, Jewish News food writer,
cookbook author and former caterer;
Joan Kekst, Cleveland-based food writer
and cookbook author; Paul Wertz, owner
of Excellence Too catering, and Eric
Novak, editor/founder of Jim Hiller's
wine club newsletter and a wine buyer for
Hiller's Markets.
The program will teach traditional
Jewish foods to individuals who may
never have experienced them.
"Memories are very sensory-based.
The taste of gefilte fish or the texture of a
velvety matzah ball are experiences that
can transport many Jews to a past
Passover meal. But for those who are new
or returning to the faith, you really have
no memories of such foods," said Jill
Sklar, chairperson of the event.
"The purpose of the program is to
equip these individuals with the tools to
create these foods, with the hope that
they will create their own Jewish memo-
ries with these foods."
Flavors of Jewish Life will feature two
45-minute class periods. Through
advance registration, participants will be
able to choose classes such as "Cooking
for the High Holi-daze," "Don't Pass-over
... Passover Cooking," "Fabulous
Finishes," "Sharing Shabbat," and "Mazel
Tov! It's a Simcha!"
For $18, participants will be able to
register for two of the five classes and
receive a cookbook of all of the recipes
presented that day.
The program is sponsored by Project
N.A.O.M.I. (Newcomers Affiliating
through Outreach and Mentoring
Initiative), a project of the Agency for
Jewish Education and Jewish Family
Service.
It is co-sponsored by the Community
Outreach and Education Department of
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, the Jewish News and the sister-
hoods of Adat Shalom Synagogue,
Temple Beth El, Temple Israel, and con-
gregations Shaarey Zedek, Shir Tikveh,
Beth Shalom and Beth Ahm.
