Morning sessions, 10:30 a.m.-noon, will focus on contemporary issues; after- noon programs, 1-2:30 p.m., will focus on culture in our area. All sessions will be at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield at no charge. Jack Lessenberry, editorial adviser and freelance writer and member of the journalism faculty at Wayne State University, will open the morning ses- sions Feb. 28 discussing "Implications of the Republican Controlled Congress." On Friday, March 7, Rabbi Sherwin Wine, founder of the Birmingham Temple, will speak on "The Rise, Decline and Fall of the Arab Empire." Fay Righthand, professor emeritus and adjunct professor of neurosciences at the Wayne State University School of Medicine will talk on bioterrorism on March 14. Rabbi Leonardo Bitran of Congregation Shaarey Zedek will talk on "Jews in South America" March 21. Completing the morning sessions on March 28 will be Dr. Rosina Nierbaum, dean of the School of Natural Resources and Environment, University of Michigan. Her presentation is "Fueling the Future: Energy for a Small Planet. " "Brass Instruments: A Playful History" will be the first afternoon pres- entation, on Feb. 28. Presenters will be Joseph Labuta, professor emeritus, Department of Music, Wayne State University, and his son, Joseph W. Labuta. On March 7, Nira Pullin, professor of stage movement and choreographer, Wayne State University Theater, and 18 of her students will present " A Preview of Broadway Bound." Dr. David Magidson, director of the Jewish Film Festival and professor of theater at WSU, will offer a "Preview of the Jewish Film Festival" on March 14. Hope Palmer, local art curator and critic, artist, art historian, lecturer and teacher, will discuss "Contermporary Art, Contemporary Dilemma' on March 21. Concluding the afternoon sessions on March 28 will be Robert Bergman, cellist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, who will speak on "Playing and Building the Cello." The IRP spring 2003 mini series is underwritten by contributions from IRP members Al Ascher and Evelyn and Jack Schrieier and income from the Julius and Ruth Novick Senior Adult Program Fund.
