Com ity JEWISH ACADEMY of Metropolitan Detroit My name is Monica Woll. Israel has a special place in my heart, and thanks to being a student at JAMD, I have had many amazing opportunities to express my love for Eretz Yisrael. Last year, I partici- pated in the nationwide march in Washington, DC in support of Israel and helped organize the first student rally here in Detroit. But nothing compares to our senior class trip to Israel. I got to experience everything I had been learning my whole life. Stories I had read about in the Bible came alive as I stood in the places where they happened. When we hiked in the desert, I imagined the ancient Israelites wandering across the same sands thousands of years ago. When I stood at the Kotel, I felt the kind of closeness to God that our ancestors experienced. Being sur- rounded by immigrants from Russia and Ethiopia and survivors from the Holocaust, I understood the Jewish people's need for a homeland. Everywhere we went Israelis thanked us for visiting at a time like this, and I couldn't help but feel proud of who I am, proud to be a Jew, and proud to be a student at the Jewish Academy.
