found that "with rare exceptions,
almost all white law school alumni
who studied from 1990-1996 found
the law school's racial and ethnic
diversity contributed to their class-
room education."
About half these white students
rated the contributions of diversity as
"substantial."
But Regent Deitch wants to make
clear that race, alone, does not guaran-
tee admission to the university.
"Everyone we admit is academically
qualified to be a student at U-M," he
says.
One figure of interest for the Jewish
community is that while the Jewish
population in Michigan is no higher
than 1 percent of the state's roughly
10 million residents, Jewish enroll-
ment at U-M ranges between 15-20
percent of the more than 38,000 stu-
dent enrollment in Ann Arbor, says
Deitch, former president of Temple
Beth El in Bloomfield Township.
"With roughly 25,000 applicants for
5,000 undergrad slots, and 5,200 for 350
law school slots, we simply cannot accept
the many accomplished candidates every
year," says general counsel Krislov.
But attorney Terrance Pell, repre-
senting plaintiff Gratz, says the value
of diversity is not the issue here.
"This case focuses on a devise used
to guarantee a certain racial mix of
students," he says. "No one disputes
the value of diversity, but we challenge
the right to use race [to achieve it]. -
"People should not be judged by the
color of their skin," Pell adds.
Whatever one's perspective, genera-
tion or background, the U-M affirma-
tive action case will be a historic event
with, some like Krislov say, devastating
consequences in minority enrollment if
U-M loses. OtherS, like Pell, see an
injustice eliminated if the plaintiffs win.
U-M Regent Deitch suggests keep-
ing an eye on the big picture.
"Recognize that, in the long run, our
Jewish community's interests as a
minority are strengthened by the exis-
tence of an open, inclusive and toler-
ant society," he says. "Jewish commu-
nities typically flourish in open, wel-
coming and inclusive secular societies.
Americans cannot afford to leave any
segment of our society behind." ❑
