denominations — and to non-Jewish
children as well.
"We want to reach everyone. Its an
unapologetically Jewish family, but
that's not the primary focus of the book.
We're telling a story," said Brandstein.
"The series is intended for Jewish
youth across the board. There has
been overwhelmingly positive feedback
from Jewish kids from totally unaffili-
ated to religious homes."
Still, the fact that the Klein family is
Orthodox may present a few chal-
lenges unique to the Golem series.
"Overall, we keep the characters
dressed modestly," said Pinson. "There
is a level of violence we will not get
into. But then again, we will not shy
away from what we need to do with
the story line. We will try to stay away
from blood and gore.
The first issue debuted in the late
fall, with a second issue, Book Two:
Blackout, just released this month. The
series is currently bi-monthly,
although the creators hope to turn it
into a monthly publication.
The character of the Golem —
which author Michael Chabon used
recently in the Pulitzer Prize-winning
novel Kavalier and Clay — will be
introduced in the third issue.
"The Golem is part of Jewish folk-
lore, sort of a kabalistic creation,"
explained Brandstein. "Basically, it
does not have a brain but does what it
is told to do. Ultimately, it is used as a
protector of the Jewish people."
The Golem will work with the chil-
dren to battle evil.
"The Golem came about because we
wanted to create a superhero, but we
didn't want to give the powers to the
character itself," said Pinson.
"We wanted the children to be
involved. The Golem needs a leader,
someone to tell him what to do, which
will eventually be the kids. Mendy and
Rivkie will be involved with saving the
world through the Golem."
The first run of the series was 40,000
copies, sold in the United States,
England, Canada and Australia. Its cre-
ators are negotiating to have it translat-
ed into Russian and Hebrew. ❑
