James Elsman. For the sec-
ond straight year, the
Bloomfield Hills resident is
the top-ranked 65-and-over men's ten-
nis player in the Midwest, according
to the Midwest Tennis Association.
Elsman, 66, secured the No. 1 ranking
for 2002 with a stirring 10-8, third set
victory over chief rival J.B. Hayes in
Chicago's Midwest Grand Prix tourna-
ment in December. The Midwest region
includes Michigan, Ohio, Indiana,
Illinois and Wisconsin.
Elsman is ranked 26th nationally in
his age group by the U.S. Tennis
Association, up from 29 in 2001.

The JAMD's varsity volleyball squad
lost its first six matches, then rallied with
two victories. The team is led by four jun-
iors, Nicki Milgrim, Sarah Sallen,
Lauren Schanes and Pammy Gene, plus
freshmen Rachel Diskin and Jenny
Beitner. The 1-5-1 JV spikers are led by
a trio of juniors, Katie Rosen, Rachel
Hoffemblumad, Shirah. Farber, plus
freshman Danya Weltman. Justin
Young coaches both teams.
Former Birmingham Groves soccer
star Jordan Gruber finished second in
scoring for Michigan State University
with 17 points (6 goals, 5 assists) in his
sophomore season. He started 14 of 18
games, at midfield. Freshman midfielder
Erin Konheim from West Bloomfield
was fourth on MSU's women's soccer
team with 13 points (4 goals, five
assists). She started 19 of 21 games.
