At the dedication, the Abels, who are found- ing members of the Shul, also presented each of their grandchildren a model of the new Torah, handcrafted by Martin Abel. "It was gorgeous," Rabbi Shemtov said. "Each one was on a stand, in a glass case given so each of the grandchildren will always feel a connection with the Torah and will always remember their Jewish heritage and their grand- parents." Guests were given a piece of fabric cut from the material that made the Torah covering. "It is given as a reminder of the cherished celebra- tion and as a merit for health and long life," Rabbi Shemtov said. For West Bloomfield's Brian Abel, 13-year- old grandson of Phyllis and Martin Abel, the special day held a personal milestone. He was given the honor of receiving the first aliyah (call to the Torah) to read from the new Torah dedicated in memory of his great-grand- parents. "What a wonderful mitzvah," Rabbi Shemtov said of the event. "A link to the past — a legacy for the future." ❑ The Greatest Interactive Entertainment in the Country is in your Bock Yard!
