In a development likely to raise ten-
sions between the two sides, Israel this
week appropriated Palestinian land near
Rachel's Tomb on the outskirts of
Bethlehem for a security wall.
Israel says the wall is necessary to
protect Jewish worshipers and keep
Palestinian terrorists out of Israel.
Palestinians complain that Israel
grabbed the land illegally and is divid-
ing the town in violation of previous
peace agreements.
In another development Monday,
Israel's 16th Knesset was sworn in. The
Knesset is scheduled to conclude in
November 2007, but could it end
sooner if early elections are called
before then.
On Wednesday, Israeli legislators
approved the appointment of Likud
legislator Reuven Rivlin as Knesset
speaker. No other party fielded a candi-
date for the position.
Support for Rivlin was near unani-
mous, with only seven Arab legislators
abstaining. In anticipation of the
appointment, Rivlin submitted his res-
ignation as communications minister
earlier this week. ❑
