of Jerusalem. We learned in Gilo why
they had bulletproof windows and
cement walls (protection from snipers)
and saw the perseverance of the Israeli
mentality from the inspiring murals on
those walls.
At one point, when we were on a cliff
overlooking Har Homa, an army jeep
drove up; two young soldiers and an
officer got out and started their training
in terrain and location.
Unfortunately, the trip had to end.
We met in the Dan Panorama Hotel for
more amazing speakers, Richard Joel
and Avraham Infeld. Tired, we somehow
made it through with laughs and post-
lecture questions. A quick break for a
birthday cake for Lizzie Cohen, and we
were done.
Everyone was pretty upset that two
weeks were over so quickly. Even think-
ing about it now brings a smile to my
face. I find myself looking back, wishing
for warmer times with great friends.
I experienced and learned amazing
things during my trip. I discovered that
our base, Netafim, has mentally handi-
capped children volunteering weekly to
help. I learned about the Druze and how
they serve in the army.
I am skilled in preparing vital army
supplies for shipment to the Lebanese
border, and my. Hebrew is wonderfully
better. I heard soldiers' and citizens' feel-
ings about the present and the future. I
absorbed new ways to fight campus anti-
Semitism/anti-Zionism with advocacy
hints. I learned of online ways to buy
Israeli products and so much more.
Speaking on behalf of my 27 cohorts,
I thank our three benefactor families and
the Jewish Federation from my heart,
knowing that it is not enough.
Financially, emotionally and physically,
Israel needs American Jews now more
than ever.
A volunteer trip is not limited to any
age group. It provides an unforgettable
experience, allows you to meet new people
from all backgrounds and even allows
time to tour.
You won't regret it. I don't. ❑
