ENERGIZING WOMEN
- CO r tif
Different For Women
According to Dr. Beyar, the mortality
rate from heart disease has declined for
men but not for women. He cited dia-
betes, hypertension (high blood pres-
sure), obesity, high cholesterol, smoking
and genetic predisposition as the major
risk factors for cardiovascular disease. He
pointed out that women are more prone
to be affected by many of these factors.
Dr. Beyar is dean of the Technion's
Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine
and also serves as director of its inva-
sive cardiology program. He is interna-
tionally known for his groundbreaking
work in the development of coronary
and vascular scents, devices used for
opening clogged arteries.
Dr. Beyar has published more than
60 papers in top professional journals.
He has co-edited several books about
cardiovascular medicine and biomed-
ical engineering. He is also a pioneer
in the field of human embryonic stem-
cell research.
"It's very important for women to
know that the symptoms of heart dis-
ease are different for us than they are
for men," said Susie Dubin of West
Bloomfield, who survived a massive
heart attack three years ago.
"I had no chest pains. We have to
understand that we've been ignored,
that the emphasis has been on heart
disease for men and on cancer for
women. We all need more education."
Dr. Beyar agreed. He said women
often have non-specific warning signs
of heart trouble, such as flu-like symp-
toms, pain in one arm or a general
feeling of just "not being right." He
stressed the importance of seeking
immediate medical attention and said
women statistically wait longer than
men before going to the hospital or
calling an ambulance.
"Time is critical. The sooner treat-
ment is sought, the greater the chances
are for survival," he said.
"As women, we have to realize the
magnitude of our risk," said Dr. Pamela
Markowitz, who heads a program specif-
ically for women at the heart center of
Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
"I'm very excited about all of this —
I've learned a lot," said Women's Task
Force member Jessie Stern of Franklin.
"I think it's very important to have a
women's component to the Technion."
"Technion is a marvelous organiza-
tion, and I support anything they do,"
said Marilyn Berman of West
Bloomfield. "I came tonight to hear
the doctor. I know the importance of
()pod health."
