If you're currently in a GMAC lease that expires
synagogue missions that visit Israel
throughout the holiday season do help
business throughout the Ben Yehuda
area. As for this year, however, Sason's
sad reply is, "Not this time. No people."
He agrees with Shemtov that busi-
ness is suffering because of Ben
Yehudah's reputation as a terrorist tar-
get, not because there are fewer
tourists in the country. "They are
afraid to come to the City Center ...
what can I do? It is very bad."
Two customers admiring a display
case, a mother and daughter from
Chicago, overhear Sason's words and
look alarmed at the prospect of losing
a shopping venue. "You should write
up this store, say good things," the
woman says. "We come here every
time we're in Jerusalem."
Businesses in this area are indeed
grateful to the tourists who are defying
the terrorist threat — and the weather
— to do the their part to help not
only the City Center, but the suffering
economy of Israel in general. One jew-
elry store, for example, shows appreci-
ation for tourists with a huge banner
hanging from the ceiling that reads
"Welcome, Brave Americans."
Perhaps the torrential rains beating
against the streets of Jerusalem today
are forerunners of a blessing of a different
sort — the economic boost that Israel and
its small businesses need to survive. ❑

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
has held several meetings in recent
weeks with members of the
Palestinian Authority leadership.
But his preconditions for fully
restarting peace negotiations — a
change in Palestinian leadership,
governmental and security services
reforms to end P.A. corruption, and
an end to terror — emanate from
lessons learned during the current
war the Palestinians are waging.
BEHIND THE ISSUE
Sharon has pledged not to return to
the weaknesses of the Oslo process,
which resulted in rampant.incite-
ment against Jews in Palestinian
textbooks, summer camps and
mosques; the massing of illegal
weapons; and legitimacy for Yasser
Arafat who, in the end, did not
change his terrorist "stripes."
